Keizu - or lineage in Japanese, is a very important part of any Okinawan karate school or system. The Arizona Traditional Karate Center at 60 W. Baseline (Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai Hombu) along the border of Mesa and Gilbert has lineage documentaion dating back for many hundreds of years. The Soke of this style was presented certifications for his system in 1999 by Zen Kokusai Soke Budo Bugei Renmei, a lineage chart by Juko Kai International in 2006 and was promoted to judan in 2004 by Dai-Soke R. Sacharnoski. Members of Seiyo Kai travel world wide to train under Soke Hausel in karate, kobudo, self-defense, philosophy and more.

Shorin-Ryu Karate, one of the original styles of karate developed on Okinawa has evolved into several hybrid forms including Seiyo Kai Shorin-Ryu. Seiyo focuses on power and acceleration to develop unusual force and speed. Those who master the art are known to have one-punch knockout power, but at the same time, are taught to master themselves and show respect to all others. It is a strange dichotomy, but necessary to bring a person to peace within oneself.

As you may have gathered, those who train at the Arizona Hombu at the border of Gilbert and Mesa, are trained in the art of self-defense, kata (forms) and kobudo (weapons) but are also taught the art of life and are asked to live by dojo kun (philosophy) designed to improve oneself and self-confidence.

‘No matter how you excel in the art of te (karate) and in your scholastic endeavors, nothing is more important than your behavior and your humanity as observed in daily life’ - Teijunsoku. (this zen is particularly applicable considering that Seiyo Shorin-Ryu includes many scholars in a variety of sciences, engineering, etc.

Shoshin Nagamine (1907-1997), Grandmaster of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu karate wrote, "if there is no kata, there is no karate, just kicking & punching"
The purpose of Karate Lies not in defeat or victory, but in the perfection of its participants.
